THE ÖNCÜ CULTURAL CENTER
A new approach , A
new living space , A new life
| |
Everything
starts with a dream. In 1987 the New Manisa Project was a beautiful dream
but now it has turned into a reality. Just like this project, Öncü Cultural
Center will also become a reality.
Öncü
Cultural Center is in the middle of the New Manisa Housing area.
Underground level has a big area and above ground there are three entrances.
When you take the entrances and follow the stairs down, you see three big
salons, a stage theater, a movie theater and a health and fitness center.
New Manisa will realize another of its dreams. Theaters, Health and Fitness
center, basketball and tennis courts will be completed and become functional. |
| |
| |
The back side of the
entrances to the Öncü Cultural Center. A tennis court. Tennis practice
walls and two multifunctional halls. In these halls, fine arts courses like
painting, sculpting and ceramic design will be taught. These halls will be
used for education: sharing wisdom and love.
| |
| |
When you go
down to the lower level, you will see people discussing the movies they’ve
just watched. They will follow the plays and exhibitions there. |
| |
| |
There will be concessions
available in the lobby adjacent to the theaters. This area can also be used
for cocktail parties or exhibitions. |
| |
| |
The Öncü
Cultural Center will be a place where art lovers of all ages can congregate,
interact with each other. |
| |
| |
In the multifunctional
halls, there will be plays, movies and other activities. It will be a place
for civic meetings. These halls will be filled with people producing,
sharing and improving their lives and the lives of those around them. |
| |
| |
This place
will add to Manisa’s art and culture and facilitate a healthy urbanization
process. People will no longer need to travel to İzmir to watch a play.
Building a stage theater is one way of showing our respect for our arts and
cultural history.
According to
Muhsin Ertuğrul, the great Turkish theatrical icon, “A human being’s most
valuable possessions are his body and his soul. As hospitals heal our
bodies, theaters heal our souls. A man without a spirit is an empty shell.
A shell that can not think, feel; is away from humanity and can not separate
good from evil.” “…you measure one society’s culture with its theater. You
measure its humanity with its theater. A feeling of humanity is grafted
there.” “Theaters are as important as schools and hospitals. A patient who
is physically ill dies, a patient who is mentally ill kills.” “A society
without theater first loses its language, forgets traditions then looses it
all. The greatest evil happens when we leave each other.”
It should be our duty to finish the Öncü Cultural Center and make the
theaters and health and fitness center functional. |
| |
| |
The people who believe
that “movies should be watched on the big screen” can come to the Öncü
Cultural Center and enjoy movies the way they were meant to be.
| |
| |
The Öncü Cultural Center movie theater will be
the meeting place of culture, art and cinema lovers. |
| |
| |
The Öncü health and
fitness center will serve the ones that want to improve themselves
physically. There will be everything that a five star hotel has in its
fitness salon.
| |
| |
In the Öncü
Cultural Center health and fitness center, there will be different areas for
different work outs.

In New Manisa, as a result
of our understanding that urban cooperatives are responsible for creating
social space and green areas together with houses and apartments, we planted
trees, scattered statues and built play areas even before housing
construction started. As with any pioneering efforts, we had our critics.
Now we enjoy the feeling that we did it right, sitting under the elm tree we
planted with our own hands. We don’t believe that our job is finished when
we give the keys to the new home owners, but we strive to become active
urban citizens.

Manisa
Tarzanı is the model to all with his love of trees and nature. He made the
green Manisa dream a reality, he planted trees in Manisa’s streets and parks.
He did what we all should do with out any excuses. If one can do what we
all should do than the Manisa Tarzanı is alive. To honor his name and
memory, we have built a statue of him in New Manisa. Now, every year on the
31 of May we celebrate “Manisa Tarzanı remembrance and environment day”.

We made water, which is
the beginning of life, an indispensable part of our landscaping. We built
pools that resemble natural streams. Now, in these pools, fish thrive
freely as in nature. Song birds are flocking to our trees naturally. Duck
build there homes in bushes and multiply. The New Manisa Öncü housing
project has become a veritable bird paradise and nature park.

When we put the world peace statue, made up of
over 40,000 beads, in the New Manisa Peace courtyard, there were no
buildings in the area. No buildings, but trees and statues and playing
children in the playground.

During the Barış Manço
concert, we unveiled the World Peace Statue and the Solidarity Statue.
10,000 people enjoyed the concert that day. We remember those good days
when we planned for the future.

New Manisa
is beautiful in every season. On a winter day, when everything was covered
in snow, we captured this scene.

In the New Manisa Öncü housing area, the first
building to be completed was this Japanese buffet house. With it’s
interesting architecture it draws not only people’s attention but hundreds
of birds under its roof. It serves as a tea house. |
| |
| |
When dreams
become reality in New Manisa, we continue to sit under the elm tree to dream
new dreams.
| |
| |
In the Öncü social
facility there is a multipurpose hall where we hold our general meetings and
educational activities. There we get together to find solutions to our
common problems. |

| |
In this new
Manisa Öncü housing area, we are raising the consciousness of our children
to protect the environment. |
| |
| |
Not only people from
Manisa, but people outside the area come to visit the New Manisa Peace
Courtyard.
| |
| |
With its
pools, fish, ducks, peacocks and flora, New Manisa Öncü housing project is
a livable, sustainable environment in all four seasons. |

We didn’t wait for the
buildings to be finished before we started hosting events. In the building
sites and open areas we held cultural and educational activities. |
